From SEO to GEO

The Solutions Review editors are exploring how and why companies should develop a marketing strategy that prioritizes Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) over traditional SEO best practices.

The ongoing, but probably irreversible, shift from traditional search engines to generative AI platforms represents one of the most significant disruptions to digital marketing since Google’s PageRank algorithm fundamentally restructured how information gets discovered online. While SEO practitioners spent decades optimizing for ten blue links, the emergence of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and similar platforms has created an entirely new paradigm where AI systems are synthesizing information and presenting direct answers rather than offering pathways to websites. This isn’t merely an evolution of search marketing—it’s a complete reimagining of how brands must position themselves in the information ecosystem.

With that in mind, the Solutions Review editors are exploring how enterprise technology brands can pivot their search engine optimization (SEO) strategy into a generative engine optimization (GEO) strategy, and why doing so is no longer a question of whether to develop one, but rather how quickly it can be launched.

The Fundamental Difference Between SEO and GEO

Search engine optimization operates on a relatively straightforward premise: convince algorithmic crawlers that your content deserves prominent placement in results pages, then capture clicks from users who have signaled their intent through query formulation. The entire framework assumes that users will navigate to your domain, consume your content on your terms, and potentially convert within your controlled environment.

However, generative engine optimization functions on entirely different mechanics. AI platforms don’t drive traffic to your website, but consume your content as training data or reference material, then reconstitute that information within their own response frameworks. The result is that users never have to leave the AI interface, since it provides them with synthesized answers that may draw from dozens of sources simultaneously, with attribution ranging from explicit citations to complete opacity depending on the platform and query type. While these AI platforms are still learning and the methods they use to learn are evolving (in response to legal and ethical developments, among others), the results are clear: people want them to stick around.

This transformation means that traditional conversion funnels could be on the edge of total collapse. The moment of engagement isn’t when someone clicks through to your site but when an AI model incorporates your perspective, data, or framework into its response. Your marketing success depends not on capturing attention through search result placement but on becoming an authoritative source that AI systems reliably reference when addressing queries in your domain.

Understanding How Generative Engines Process Information

Most current generative AI platforms operate through a combination of training data and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). The training data represents a snapshot of internet content up to a specific cutoff date. Meanwhile, RAG systems enable models to access and incorporate more recent information through web searches or real-time document retrieval. This architecture creates several optimization opportunities that differ fundamentally from traditional SEO.

For one, training data integration means that high-quality, authoritative content published before the model’s cutoff date becomes baked into the model’s understanding of topics. The AI doesn’t need to retrieve this information because it already understands concepts through the patterns it learned during training. Consequently, content that influences training data shapes how models perceive entire topic areas.

RAG systems present different dynamics. When an AI platform performs retrieval to answer queries, it evaluates sources based on relevance, recency, and authority, then synthesizes that information from multiple retrieved documents. The goal isn’t to rank first in a traditional sense but to be included in the retrieval set and to provide information structured in ways that models can easily extract and integrate into coherent responses.

As you can imagine, platform-specific approaches vary significantly. Some AI systems provide explicit citations with links, creating a new form of referral traffic. Others synthesize information without attribution, making brand recognition and repeated exposure across multiple sources the only viable strategy for establishing mind share. Still others allow users to access source documents directly, transforming the AI interface into a discovery layer rather than a final destination.

Strategic Pillars for Generative Engine Optimization

Understanding how generative engines work is one thing, but knowing how to optimize your brand’s content and identity for them is another. That’s where the term Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) comes from. As new a strategy as it is, it’s already gaining momentum and proving to be a powerful addition to marketing strategies across markets.

Authority Architecture

Traditional SEO prioritizes domain authority as a holistic metric aggregating backlinks, traffic, and trust signals across an entire website. GEO, meanwhile, requires a more granular approach to authority that focuses on topical expertise and source credibility within specific knowledge domains. Additionally, counter to traditional SEO wisdom, which encourages broad keyword targeting, GEO often rewards extreme specialization. Being the unambiguous authority on a narrow topic makes you indispensable for AI systems addressing that subject, while being one of thousands of reasonable sources on a broad topic makes you easily substitutable in synthetic responses.

Building authority for AI systems means establishing your organization as the definitive source for specific concepts, frameworks, datasets, or methodologies. This requires moving beyond keyword-focused content toward creating comprehensive resources that demonstrate genuine expertise. AI models trained on authoritative sources internalize not just individual facts but entire conceptual frameworks, making depth and interconnection more valuable than breadth.

Verification mechanisms also matter more in generative contexts than in traditional search. AI platforms are increasingly incorporating source quality assessments into their retrieval and synthesis processes. As a result, organizations that can demonstrate expertise through credentials, peer review, institutional backing, or verifiable track records gain disproportionate influence in how models represent information in their respective domains.

Structured Knowledge Representation

Generative AI models excel at extracting structured information from unstructured text, but explicitly structured content makes this process exponentially more reliable. Organizations that format knowledge in ways that align with how AI systems process information gain significant advantages in retrieval and synthesis accuracy. Schema markup, which provided marginal benefits in traditional SEO, becomes far more valuable for GEO. Structured data enables AI systems to understand the relationships between entities, extract specific data points, and maintain accuracy when synthesizing information across multiple sources.

Semantic clarity in content structure helps models parse meaning correctly. This means moving away from creative headline writing and metaphorical language toward explicit, unambiguous expression of concepts. While traditional SEO sometimes rewards clever wordplay that captures long-tail searches, GEO favors straightforward articulation that models can confidently interpret and replicate.

Documentation formats that separate context from core information improve extractability. When AI systems retrieve content, they need to distinguish between background explanations and actionable insights, between qualifications and central claims, and between your perspective and the consensus. Content that makes these distinctions explicit through clear structural elements gets represented more accurately in AI responses.

Temporal Optimization

The time dimension functions differently in generative engine optimization compared to traditional search. SEO frequently emphasizes freshness signals, rewarding recently published or updated content with temporary ranking boosts. GEO creates a bifurcated temporal landscape where both historical influence and real-time relevance matter, but through separate mechanisms.

Content that influences training data carries significant weight in how models understand fundamental concepts, creating a strong incentive to publish authoritative frameworks and original research as early as possible to claim conceptual territory before competitors. Simultaneously, RAG systems create demand for continuously updated information on evolving topics. Organizations that maintain current and accurate data on developing situations position themselves as essential sources for real-time analysis and synthesis.

One potential outcome of this new approach is a divergence in content strategies, with one avenue focusing on foundational content that aims to shape AI training data, and the other on dynamic content intended for retrieval systems. Organizations that recognize this split and allocate resources to both types of content appropriately will outperform those applying uniform approaches across all material.

Tactical Implementation Approaches

Translating GEO principles into operational reality requires moving beyond conceptual frameworks into concrete content development and technical optimization practices. The strategic pillars outlined above provide directional guidance, but execution demands specific techniques for structuring information, formatting content, and establishing entity relationships that generative AI systems can reliably process and incorporate. The tactics that follow represent new approaches to content creation that prioritize machine extractability alongside human readability, recognizing that your primary audience now includes AI systems that will mediate how humans ultimately encounter your ideas.

Entity Optimization

Generative AI models understand information through entities and their relationships rather than through keywords and phrases. Optimizing for entity recognition means ensuring that your organization, products, executives, methodologies, and other important entities get consistently and accurately represented in AI knowledge bases. As such, variations in how you refer to your organization, products, or concepts can create ambiguity that models may resolve incorrectly, potentially conflating your entities with those of competitors or fragmenting understanding across multiple representations.

Meanwhile, entity-relationship articulation clarifies how different concepts are connected. Explicitly stating relationships between your organization and industry standards, between your products and use cases, and between your executives and their areas of expertise helps models build accurate knowledge graphs that inform how they discuss your entities in synthetic responses.

Multi-Modal Content Strategy

Text-focused optimization makes sense when targeting search engines that primarily process written content. Generative AI platforms are increasingly incorporating multimodal capabilities, which enable them to understand and generate images, analyze videos, and process other content formats beyond pure text. For example, AI systems can now process video transcripts and, increasingly, visual content from video frames. This means that organizations producing video content should ensure comprehensive transcription, time-stamped descriptions of visual elements, and structured metadata that help models understand not just what’s said but also what’s shown.

Visual content optimized for AI interpretation understandably requires different approaches than visual content designed for human consumption. Alt text, captions, and the surrounding textual context help models understand images, but layout, diagram structure, and the visual information hierarchy also play a role. Charts, infographics, and data visualizations that clearly label axes, include legends, and maintain high contrast support accurate AI interpretation.

Multi-modal content, specifically video, will likely become significantly more valuable for GEO as models improve at cross-modal reasoning. Organizations that invest in creating rich media content with strong structural signals and comprehensive metadata will establish a competitive advantage as AI platforms incorporate these capabilities into their retrieval and synthesis workflows.

Measurement and Analytics for GEO

Traditional SEO metrics focus on rankings, traffic, and conversions within your owned properties. GEO is something altogether new, though, and requires developing new measurement frameworks that account for influence and presence within AI platforms that don’t drive traffic to your site.

One way to track your company’s GEO efforts is through citation tracking across AI responses, which provides a direct measurement of when platforms reference your content. Organizations serious about GEO need to develop monitoring capabilities that track both explicit citations and implicit incorporation of your ideas and frameworks. Some tools have emerged to monitor these citations, although the landscape remains immature compared to traditional SEO analytics. Teams should keep a close eye on that market as it develops.

Brand mention analysis in AI responses measures when platforms discuss your organization, products, or executives without necessarily citing specific content. This softer metric captures presence in the AI information ecosystem even when direct attribution doesn’t occur. Another approach is to track competitive positioning in AI responses, which reveals how models present your organization relative to competitors. When users ask comparative questions or request recommendations, understanding how AI platforms position your offerings relative to alternatives provides crucial strategic intelligence.

The challenge is that generative AI platforms provide limited visibility into when and how they use content, making measurement inherently more difficult than traditional analytics. Organizations should expect to invest significantly in developing proprietary measurement approaches until the analytics ecosystem matures.

Looking Forward: The Evolution of Generative Engine Optimization

The current state of GEO represents an early-stage territory, as organizations figure out how to influence AI systems that are themselves rapidly evolving. Several developments are likely to dramatically reshape the field over the next few years, so brands must ensure their marketing and GEO-centric strategies can adapt to whatever new trends emerge. Here are a few predictions for what trends could be on the horizon:

  • Retrieval mechanisms will become more sophisticated, incorporating quality signals that reward authoritative sources and penalize low-quality content farms attempting to game generative systems.
  • Personalization in AI responses will fragment the optimization landscape. As models learn individual user preferences and tailor responses accordingly, universal optimization strategies become less effective. Organizations will need to consider how to remain relevant across diverse, personalized contexts rather than optimizing for a single, canonical response.
  • Commercial integration of AI platforms will create new paid placement opportunities alongside organic optimization. Early signals suggest that sponsored content within AI responses may evolve into a significant revenue stream for platform operators, although business models remain uncertain.

Success in the generative AI era requires accepting that you may never control the environment where your ideas get consumed. Instead, you can influence the knowledge ecosystem that AI systems draw from, shaping how they think about and present information in your domain. Organizations that embrace this shift and develop robust GEO capabilities now will establish advantages that compound as generative AI becomes the dominant interface for information discovery.

National Insider Threat Awareness Month Quotes and Commentary from Industry Experts in 2025

For National Insider Threat Awareness Month 2025, the editors at Solutions Review have compiled a list of comments from some of the leading industry experts.

As part of this year’s National Insider Threat Awareness Month, we called for the industry’s best and brightest in Identity and Access Management and the broader cybersecurity market to share best practices, predictions, and personal anecdotes. The experts featured represent some of the top influencers, consultants, and solution providers with experience in these marketplaces, and each quote has been vetted for relevance and ability to add business value.

National Insider Threat Awareness Month Quotes from Industry Experts in 2025

Jake Bell, Engineer Team Lead at Object First

“This National Insider Threat Awareness month is a reminder that one of the biggest risks to an organization’s data often can come from within the company. Whether through malicious intent or simple human error, insiders can inadvertently open the door to catastrophic breaches. The most dangerous mindset for any organization is believing ‘it won’t happen to us.’ In today’s threat landscape, leaders must operate under the assumption that a breach is inevitable. This means that secure, tested, and adaptable backup strategies are a non-negotiable.

“This month, IT teams should ensure Zero Trust Disaster Resilience (ZTDR) practices are incorporated into their storage infrastructure. With ZTDR, admins can truly harden their data protection architectures by segmenting backup software and storage, creating resilience zones, and leveraging immutable backups as the final line of defense when attackers slip past defenses. Whether through shadow IT, evolving AI tools, or the click of an unsuspecting employee, with immutable backups and ZTDR principles in place, organizations ensure recovery remains possible even in worst-case insider threat scenarios. Awareness is important, but resilience is essential.”

Patrick Harding, Chief Architect at Ping Identity

“Insider threats have long been a security risk for organizations, but the attack surface is expanding into new territory: AI agents can now act like internal users with their own access and behavior patterns. With 79 percent of senior executives reporting that AI agents are already being adopted in their companies, we’re facing a very stark reality where determining human behavior from bot behavior might be the difference between securing your organization and falling victim to a nefarious attacker.

“Whether it’s a malicious insider, a negligent employee, or an ungoverned AI agent behaving unexpectedly, the fallout from insider threats can be disastrous and long-lasting. That’s why early detection, including identifying unusual patterns like unexpected login attempts or unusual data access, is critical. However, detection alone isn’t enough. Real‑time risk assessment is essential to immediately identify and prioritize the most urgent threats. Finally, decisive actions, including escalating to security operations or enforcing stricter policies, must follow. This month is an important reminder to recognize that every identity, human or AI, needs to be treated with the same level of caution and verification.”

Pete Luban, Field CISO at AttackIQ

“Insider threats, whether from disgruntled employees or compromised credentials, are challenging to detect and prevent with traditional security measures. Insider Awareness Month serves as a reminder to security teams about the importance of simulating real-world insider attack scenarios to assess the effectiveness of their security controls and response protocols.

“Recent spikes in shadow AI usage and a lack of proper cyber hygiene increase the likelihood of insider threats. Using unauthorized tools or platforms can unknowingly expose sensitive data or create exploitable vulnerabilities, as well as poor security practices, like maintaining outdated software or weak passwords.

“By integrating techniques, such as adversarial emulation, into the security lifecycle, organizations can uncover gaps in their detection and mitigation strategies before a real attack occurs. Simulated, continuous testing can ensure that security teams can mitigate attacks before insider threats sidestep defenses and steal valuable company data.”

Joshua Roback, Principal Security Solution Architect at Swimlane

“Insider threats have always been one of the hardest challenges for security teams because they originate from people with legitimate access. Unlike external adversaries, they don’t have to find a way in. They already have the keys. That makes their actions harder to spot and far more damaging when they turn malicious or careless.

“It’s up to organizations to ensure their security systems are well-protected, starting with determining who has access to which systems. Poorly managed access controls can create an environment for insider threats to sprout and thrive. Implementing a mature identity access management solution is the most powerful weapon in mitigating insider threat risks. User behavioural analytics (UBA) can provide proactive detection of anomalous user behaviors, giving security teams a leg up against unannounced attackers.

“The rise of insider threats has resulted in the development of security measures that can ensure that threats are monitored, analyzed, and neutralized before they escalate into catastrophic breaches. Building resilience has required organizations to combine continuous monitoring, automated response, and a strong security culture to reduce the window of opportunity for insider abuse.”

Bojan Simic, Co-Founder and CEO at HYPR

September marks Insider Threat Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, ‘Partnering for Progress,’ cuts to the core of what’s failing in enterprise security today.

“Insider threat mitigation is not an isolated security problem. It’s a company-wide imperative—and it starts with identity. Whether posed by a malicious actor or an employee simply making a user error, insider threats consistently compromise organizations by exploiting gaps in how users are verified at sign-in and throughout a session.

“Identity is rightly regarded as the new perimeter, yet it remains one of the most vulnerable points of access. This is because static credentials, one-time authentication, and siloed access controls leave too much room for misuse. Most systems validate an identity once and then blindly assume that risk has been mitigated. It hasn’t.

“But technology is only half the battle. True ‘Partnering for Progress’ means aligning IT, security, HR, and compliance. Without identity assurance embedded across these functions, insider threats will inevitably slip through. The companies that are preventing breaches are not just reacting to threats; they are proactively integrating identity into every strategic decision. They are the ones who are building a resilient, security-first culture from the inside out.”

Aditya Sood, VP of Security Engineering and AI Strategy at Aryaka

“Insider Threat Awareness Month is a critical initiative for raising awareness about the unique security risks posed by internal actors. There have been several examples of insider threats wreaking havoc on major corporations, with Elon Musk’s X being the most prominent recent example.

“A malicious insider is a significant cybersecurity risk, as such individuals can steal intellectual property, exfiltrate confidential information, sabotage systems, or manipulate business operations for personal gain or in collusion with outside threats. The impact can range from financial losses and reputational damage to regulatory penalties and national security risks.

“Awareness about malicious insider activities is crucial because employees and stakeholders must understand the importance of safeguarding credentials and the necessity of reporting suspicious activity. By teaching employees to recognize the signs of suspicious behavior and reinforcing the importance of strict access controls and reporting protocols, organizations can transform their entire workforce into a crucial line of defense against internal threats. Employees’ role in this is not just important: it’s indispensable. They are the first line of defense, and their commitment to this cause will keep organizations secure.”

Steve Wilson, Chief AI and Product Officer at Exabeam

“The danger from insider threats continues to grow in the modern cyber landscape, particularly as AI accelerates their speed, stealth, and sophistication. With 64 percent of cybersecurity professionals now viewing insiders as a greater risk than external actors, Insider Threat Awareness Month is a critical opportunity to emphasize proactive defense strategies.

“While 88 percent of organizations have insider threat programs, many lack behavioral analytics needed to detect AI-enhanced attacks that exploit trusted access and mimic legitimate user behavior. As threats intensify across sectors like government, healthcare, and manufacturing, this initiative provides an opportunity to call for stronger governance, cross-functional collaboration, and real-time detection capabilities to stay ahead of both human and AI-driven insider risks.”

Mark Wojtasiak, VP of Product Research and Strategy at Vectra AI

“Insider Threat Awareness Month is a reminder that the challenge isn’t just at the perimeter; it’s inside organizations, where identities, networks, and everyday user behavior are constantly at play. Security teams are inundated with thousands of alerts daily, yet only a small fraction represent real threats. This noise leaves many analysts unable to review more than a third of alerts, and the fear of missing an attack is a weekly reality for most SOC professionals. Ultimately, this noise drowns out the signal that matters most—the activity rooted in how identities are used and how they traverse the network.

“Compounding this, recent industry research shows that insider threats, particularly non-privileged users whose accounts are compromised or misused, are now the most prevalent attacker profile. Nearly two out of five prioritized threats are tied to insider behaviors. The reality is that user and identity misuse is inevitable in today’s complex networks and environments. That’s why security leaders need to focus on detection and response strategies that look beyond the perimeter and zero in on how accounts, identities, networks, and data are actually being used. Reducing noise while elevating the signal that matters most is critical to empowering SOC teams to catch what could otherwise slip through the cracks.”

Act! CRM Can Create a Smarter Front Office for SMBs

The editors at Solutions Review have compiled a summary of the Act! Advantage features that can help small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) create a smarter, more connected front office.

Maintaining an organized and connected front office environment is easier said than done. Whether it’s keeping your sales and marketing teams aligned, curating memorable experiences for customers, or ensuring all your technology platforms are speaking to each other, companies of any size are bound to have their hands full. While smaller businesses might have more flexibility in how they manage their processes, they also tend to have tighter margins that require them to do more with less, as the classic saying goes.

That’s where a platform provider like Act! can help. With the Act! Advantage solution suite, SMBs can centralize their customer data, sales, marketing processes, website, accounting system, and business apps to provide teams with the unified ecosystem they need to succeed and thrive in competitive markets. With that in mind, the Solutions Review editorial team outlined some of the key features that make Act! uniquely equipped to help SMBs transform their front office functions.

How Act! Advantage Can Improve Front Office Processes

Centralized Customer Data

Customer data fragmentation can be one of the most expensive operational failures modern businesses encounter. When customer information exists across multiple systems, spreadsheets, email folders, and individual team members’ files, organizations are forced to operate with incomplete intelligence about their most valuable asset. Act! Advantage aims to eliminate that fragmentation with user-friendly data centralization that makes it easy for teams to track calls, emails, notes, tasks, documents, quotes, and other information from a single, organized place.

For example, Act!’s contact management system goes beyond basic name and phone number storage by capturing and organizing everything from communication history to purchase patterns, interaction preferences, and more. Centralizing these data sets will empower front office teams to access customer profiles and pinpoint the insights they’re looking for without wasting time hunting for information across multiple sources.

The platform’s Custom Industry Tables are another feature engineered to provide teams with the insights they need to develop targeted sales and marketing strategies. Specifically, these Tables can help users across departments:

  • Gain additional insights into customers by associating support contracts, service engagements, and more with individual contacts.
  • Manage business and customer data with spreadsheet-like tables.
  • Create targeted sales campaigns that leverage the insights gathered from Act! Custom Industry Tables.
  • Leverage pre-built industry and job-specific templates to get started faster.

Attract New Prospects

Prospect attraction with Act! goes outside traditional lead generation approaches by implementing systematic methodologies that optimize every touchpoint in the prospect journey. The platform’s primary tools for attracting new prospects are its email marketing and automation capabilities. Its email marketing features are a highlight of the platform, as they make it easier than ever for users of all experience levels to create custom, professional-level emails. Those features include over 170 sample templates, a drag-and-drop interface requiring no formal coding skills, a visual workflow designer, drip marketing campaigns, and real-time email performance metrics for tracking opens, clicks, bounces, and other relevant data.

Act! Advantage’s email marketing tools integrate seamlessly with its marketing automation capabilities. Together, these feature suites empower businesses to turn their digital marketing engagement efforts into prioritized sales activities in real-time. It does this by scoring leads based on their engagement with marketing materials (i.e., emails, lead forms, surveys), automatically creating activities to ensure rapid follow-ups, and developing a closed-loop connection between sales and marketing teams to ensure each team focuses its attention where it’s most valuable.

Convert Relationships Into Sales

Relationship conversion is a critical function within front office operations, which is why Act! provides teams with the structural framework necessary to turn the interpersonal connections created by the marketing team into revenue-generating transactions. With features for opportunity tracking, pipeline management, interactive quotes, and sales process management, Act! helps sales and marketing teams forecast confidently and keep prospective customers moving through the sales funnel.

These collaboration-centric features are crucial to ensuring that every customer relationship will benefit from organizational knowledge instead of relying solely on individual sales representative capabilities. When team members can share prospect intelligence, coordinate multi-person sales efforts, drive follow-ups, and maintain continuity when account ownership transfers occur, they’ll set their business and its customers up for continued success.

Maintain Customer Loyalty

Customer loyalty can be the most cost-effective growth strategy available to organizations, yet traditional front office operations often neglect systematic retention efforts in favor of new customer acquisition activities. The customer relationship doesn’t stop at a sale, and failing to prioritize that relationship after a sales conversion can result in higher customer turnover. To help, Act! Advantage provides multiple capabilities for maintaining proactive loyalty programs that protect revenue and create expansion opportunities. These tools include:

  • Response-driven nurture marketing capabilities analyze customer response patterns to email campaigns, content engagement, and communication preferences to create personalized retention sequences. This response-driven approach adapts messaging frequency, content type, and communication channels based on individual customer behavior rather than applying uniform retention strategies across diverse customer segments.
  • Website activity tracking enables front office teams to recognize customers whose digital engagement patterns suggest declining loyalty before traditional metrics would detect problems. The Act! Advantage platform will correlate website activity with purchase history and support interactions to create comprehensive loyalty risk assessments that trigger proactive retention interventions.
  • Progressive profiling functionality enhances loyalty maintenance by continuously expanding customer knowledge through strategic information collection. Act! gradually builds comprehensive customer profiles through multiple touchpoints over extended periods to capture evolving customer preferences, changing business requirements, and shifting decision criteria that influence loyalty and retention.
  • Asset tracking within the Act! makes it easy to maintain detailed records of customer-owned assets, including purchase dates, warranty information, service histories, and upgrade opportunities.
